How to measure for your picture frame (with or without matting)

Matador - PicassoYou have the artwork. Now you just need to get it into a frame. But what frame size do you need? The answer to this question is easy to figure out. Grab a ruler or tape measure and let's get to work.

You need to measure the exact width (A) and height (B) of the outside dimensions of your artwork to the nearest 1/8". These dimensions represent the size of picture frame and/or facing that you will need. For example, when you view our frame listings and you come across an 18"x24" frame for sale, that frame is built to fit an 18"x24" print. Don't worry, we have accounted for a slight amount of wiggle room so that your print will easily but securely fit in the frame.

Now you have your artwork measured, but you want to include matting with your order. What do you do?! Don't worry, that measurement is easy to account for as well. Our mat listings are cut to a standard 2" border unless you specify otherwise in your order. If you want a mat with a standard border all you need to do is account for that measurement on the outside of your print.

Matting can add aesthetic qualities to your framed piece. Matting creates value and a sense of quality and importance in the artwork displayed. It creates a neutral backdrop and break between the print and the frame. This allows the art to stand alone and draw the viewer into the center of the piece. Matting also protects your work by creating space for air to circulate between the print and the face sheet, reducing the risk of damage over time.

When it comes to matting, there really is no right or wrong selection. It all boils down to what looks good to you. Choose a matting border width that is proportionate with the size of your print. You want the print to stand out, with the matting acting as a smooth transition between print and frame.
